DIGITAL POWER SUPPLY - OPEN FRAME (NON-PROGRAMMABLE DPS-OF)

INTRODUCTION

Magtorx's current regulated Digital Power Supply - Open Frame (DPS-OF) is a digitally controlled device designed for high performance and high accuracy.  The current regulation accuracy is better than 1% at full scale range.  Magtorx's toroidal transformer, has very low inductance leakage and excellent regulation, therefore, offering excellent efficiency. This model offers some limited programming capability an can be used for an extensive  range of OEM applications.  Magtorx's DPS can be  remotely controlled by the RS232 Port, 0 to 5 Vdc control signal or ten turns 5 kohms potentiometer - PN.5010014.  For display and other components see Product Accessories. For use with electromagnetic brakes and clutches refer to the manufacturer's Cross Reference List of the  Electromagnetic ParticlesHysteresis and Friction Brakes and Clutches.

Non-Programmable DPS-OF

The Open Frame (OF) Non-Programmable Current Regulated Digital Power Supply (DPS) is very useful for OEM use in process equipment such as tension control and for a wide range of life testing applications.

Notes:
1 The Absolute Max. Power is approx. 25% greater than the Rated Power.  This is to ensure that the power supply will continuously operate with its high accuracy at rated current even when inductive or resistive load increases up to 25%. This is useful for operations of  electromechanical brakes and clutches that require good current regulation for stable performance.

2  When connected to a low-voltage power line, the power supply may not produce rated dc output voltage.  Power supplies tend to overheat when subjected to a high voltage power line.

3  Free Air Convection - The most important requirement for cooling a power supply is to provide proper air flow.  To prevent damage to the power supply, exercise caution with the operation temperature.

Control input

RS-232; analog 0-5 Vdc; control knob (encoder).  The RS-232 interface allows complete control with a standard PC RS-232 serial port, eliminating the requirement for any additional PC I/O cards for communicating with the power supply. Note: In case RS232 serial port is not available use ATEN USB to Serial Bridge Adapter.

Current Scaling  Capability

This feature is an electronic adjustment of the control signal to the desired current.

Example:  if the maximum brake current requirement is 600mA, the maximum Control Signal of 5Vdc can be scaled to 600mA.  In other words, if the DPS’ maximum current output is 1800mA, the Control Signal level for 600mA without scaling would be 1.667V.  After scaling, the maximum Control Signal of 5 Vdc is available for 600 mA.  The reason for this feature is to ensure that the highest possible resolution of the Control Signal can be assigned to the full scale of controlled current.

To perform Current Scaling manually, see below section DPS Connection and Dimensions, Pt. 5. (see also: table mode, manual mode and  PC Mode Operation)

 DPS Connections and Dimensions

1.    External voltage control - connect 0 to 5 Vdc to terminal 4.

2.    Controlling current with potentiometer - connect 5k potentiometer to terminal 3 - GND & 4 Control (Wiper).  The 5 Vdc must be provided by the external source.  Terminal 11 can be used as a control voltage source.  However, voltage must be reduced to 5Vdc.  If the Display PN.0020503 is present, connect the potentiometer to the J2 connector located on the backside of the display.  If the Display PN.0020502 is present the potentiometer is not needed since the Display PN.0020502 is equipped with a digital encoder - see display specification for more information.

3.   Controlling with the RS232 Port- connect terminal 6 directly to ground, terminal 9 (RxDATA232) to TxRS232 on the PC side or Master Controller, and terminal 10 (TxDATA232) to RxRS232 on the PC side or Master Controller.

4.   Constant current operation - attach load to terminals 1 & 2, bridge terminals 4 & 5, then adjust trimmer R10 to the desired current.

5.   Current Scaling – attach load to terminal 1 & 2 then adjust trimmer R10 to the desired maximum current level. There is no manual reset to full scale without an appropriate resistive or inductive load. Note: The initial factory scaling is assigned based on the DPS rated current – see Product list for specifications.

6.   Display connections - connect Display - DPS terminals respectively as follows: 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, & 11-11.  See display specification for more information.

Note: The DPS Model ON-120 is a non-programmable device.  However, when used as a Slave in a Master-Slave application, the device will respond to the following commands: "#A[CR]", "LAXXXX]CR]", "PAXXXX[CR]" and "QAXXXX[CR]".  Since this power supply is a digital device, it has some limited memory. Therefore, it is capable of preserving the address "A" and values 'P" and "Q" - see commands: PC and Master-Slave for programming and point 3 above for RS232 communication.
